Amanda Thornbury

I’m the founder of Intrinsic Healing Space, a counsellor, supervisor and facilitator. I’m also a proud First Nations woman, born on Bunurong/Boon Wurrung Country, with connection to Minang and Wotjobaluk Nations.

I’m warm, curious and pretty down-to-earth in the way I work. I don't believe you need to arrive at counselling knowing exactly what to say, what you need, or even how to explain what has been happening. Part of my role is to take the time to listen and understand your experience with you.

Deep listening is at the heart of my practice. I’m interested not only in what is happening for you, but in the experiences, relationships, culture and circumstances that have shaped how you understand yourself and the world around you.

I don’t see myself as the expert in another person’s life. I bring my professional knowledge and experience, but you bring something equally important — your knowledge of you. Counselling is where we bring those things together.

A little more about me

When I'm not working, you'll often find me spending time with my two Staffies, Nala and Dex, who are very much part of my everyday life. I love getting out on the water on my stand-up paddleboard, connecting with nature, taking part in beach clean-ups, getting creative, and probably have an audiobook playing somewhere in the background.

I'm naturally curious and enjoy conversations that go a little deeper than small talk, but I also value humour and don't believe counselling needs to feel serious all of the time.

I'm a real person outside of the counselling room too. I know what it's like to navigate change, question yourself, feel uncertain about your direction, and continue learning who you are as life changes around you.

That humanity is something I bring into my work. You won't find a blank, clinical therapist sitting opposite you — you'll find another human being who is interested in getting to know and understand you.

My professional experience spans individual and relationship counselling, trauma and family violence, child and family services, workplace and EAP counselling, reflective practice, cultural supervision, and culturally informed, trauma-integrated work.

I have worked across Aboriginal community-controlled organisations, private practice and mainstream counselling settings, supporting people from a wide range of backgrounds and life experiences.

Alongside my counselling practice, I facilitate culturally informed trauma-integrated programs with We Al-li and provide reflective practice and cultural supervision.
